Canelli Wine Tasting Tour

What to Expect from the Underground Cathedrals

Canelli, in the province of Asti, is one of the major inhabited centers of Monferrato. Even Canelli, together with Asti Spumante in 2014, became part of the world heritage of UNESCO, as the Piedmont wine landscape: Langhe-Roero and Monferrato.

One of the major attractions of Canelli is certainly the sub-cathedral cathedrals (Bosca, Contratto, Coppo, Gancia).  Do not be misled by the name, they are not churches but cellars! Canelli’s underground cathedrals are a workplace where wine experts daily work to create perfect sparkling wines. During the wine tour of the underground cathedrals you will have an expert guide who will accompany the “Riserva del Nonno” in the various rooms, including the production hall of the Classic Method, which is still produced according to ancient traditions. You will have to go down 40 steps to reach the hidden underground cathedrals.

Underground Cathedrals visit

The Canelli’s area includes the municipalities of Canelli and Calosso, in the Province of Asti and Santo Stefano Belbo, in the province of Cuneo.
This land represents the production center’s excellence of Asti Spumante, deriving from the processing of White Moscato. Asti spumante is a variety historically attested in Piedmont Region, where peculiar environmental conditions have allowed its spread and tied intimately the production of its aromatic grapes to these places. From the White Moscato is also produced the Moscato d’Asti, a sweet wine, not sparkling. Discover More
