The territory of Agliano develops in a dominant position between the valleys of the Nizza and Tiglione rivers. Although the name has Roman origin, from the noble Allius, suggests an ancient presence in this land, probably for a strategic interest, the first mentions date back to the X century.
The addition of the word “Terme” is linked to the extensive sources of hipertermal water. Agliano was famous in history for being the birthplace of Bianca Lancia, last wife of Frederick II, who gave birth to Manfredi of Sicily.
What to see in Agliano Terme
The most note worthy religious building is the Parish Church dedicated to San Giacomo Apostolo (The Major), built around the middle of 1500, in Gothic style. Also on the square 01 the parish church, stands out the church of San Michele, built in the late XVII and the early XVIII century, now deconsecrated and turned into a multipurpose cultural center.
On a small hill southward is located the little church of San Sebastiano, on the site of a more ancient church dedicated to San Michele. More recent is the church of Santa Croce (185511865), which was built when the parish church of San Gaudenzio was demolished, from which the nearby town took its name.
The oldest religious structure, is certainly the church dedicated to the Annunciation of Molizzo, which stands on the hill of the same name, between woods and vineyards, surrounded by a magnificent view over the Tiglione valley. At the health spa Terme Fons Salutis, in Via Fonti 127, you can take advantage of thermal treatments, a gym and a wellness center.
